Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times has helped thousands of children and their family members recapture hope, enthusiasm, and love of life in a medically and psychologically safe environment. Since 1982, the Camp has been helping children who suffer with cancer and their families by providing comfort, care, support, and joy.

Starlight Children’s Foundation also helps children suffering from serious illness. Through a variety of programs, Starlight creates moments of joy and comfort for hospitalized kids and their families. One way is through their Starlight Fun Centers, which are areas of entertainment and distraction in the otherwise bleak environment of many hospitals.

We're Making a Difference

In our Southern California and Nevada offices, our mission is to inspire people to realize their financial security dreams. Our mission is supported by the strength of Northwestern Mutual, a world-class financial institution that is over 160 years old. Consistent with our mission, we value philanthropy as way to make a significant impact in our local community. Parallel to the professional work we do in financial services, we wholeheartedly believe that our community service work will also inspire children and families to realize their dreams. To that end, we have chosen childhood cancer as a cause in which we are putting our collective energy, which aligns directly with the goals of the Northwestern Mutual Foundation and our partnership with Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

We're Raising Awareness and Funding for Childhood Cancer Research

Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children under the age of 15 years old, according to the National Cancer Institute. However, financial support for childhood cancer research remains vastly underfunded. We're on a mission to change that. We're partnering with the Northwestern Mutual Foundation and our non-profit partner Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation to raise critical dollars for research.

Every year, members of our organization impact the fight against childhood cancer by raising funds for life-saving research during the “Annual Race for Research” in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Since 2013, we have raised over $20,000 through this race. The donation, which was made to Alex's Lemonade Stand, has funded over 400 hours of research.

We're Leading by Example

In addition to Northwestern Mutual - Los Angeles' commitment to fighting childhood cancer, our team members donate their time and talent as well as their financial support to charities and causes that matter to them and our community. They are rebuilding neighborhoods, helping students succeed, broadening perspectives and opportunities for the disadvantaged, and improving the quality of life for people with life-altering illnesses.

We Support Kids with Special Needs

As part of a broader philanthropy effort to advance autism education and support services, we have developed an innovative internship program in partnership with local universities. In this program, we offer college students with Autism Spectrum Disorder a workplace experience so they can learn valuable job skills in a professional setting. Our program is designed for students who exhibit intellectual abilities but may face executive functioning and social challenges in an integrated environment. Our focus is on creating a paradigm shift in which we can apply the unique abilities of these individuals to our business needs. By providing mentorship, training, and a supportive culture, we enable these students to improve their quality of life in college and launch them into successful careers.

We're Recognized for Our Dedication

Northwestern Mutual Downtown Los Angeles and its affiliated districts has been awarded the Childhood Cancer Impact Award by the Northwestern Mutual Foundation. As part of its efforts to fund childhood cancer research and support families battling the disease, Northwestern Mutual partners with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation to raise funds and awareness. Due to the exceptional service efforts by the local office, Starlight Children's Foundation will receive a $50,000 grant on their behalf.

Philanthropic Highlights

We want to have an immediate impact on families in Southern California and Nevada facing childhood cancer and other debilitating illnesses. Some of our philanthropic highlights include the following:

Bringing Joy to Summerlin Hospital

Representatives from Northwestern Mutual Las Vegas and Los Angeles attended Summerlin Hospital  to celebrate the soon-to-be Starlight Site, made possible by our efforts to raise over $40,000 towards this cause. The Starlight Site will include up-to-date technology, including Virtual Reality devices for the kids to enjoy. This addition to Summerlin Hospital will help to break up the monotony of growing up in the hospital, both for children and their parents.

Family Day with LA Family Housing

Volunteers from our offices spent a Saturday enjoying time with clients of LA Family Housing. Kids enjoyed games, lunch, face painting, and a bouncy castle. Activities like this bring dignity, community, and joy to families transitioning from homelessness to sustainable living environments. We are proud that we were able to donate an additional $15,000 to the organization, thanks to the award earned by local Associate Financial Representative Garin Demirjian. Because of Garin's efforts to support LA Family Housing last fall, the Northwestern Mutual Foundation awarded her with a $15,000 grant towards LA Family Housing's expaning network of innovative living solutions. Thank you to Garin and to LA Family Housing for the good you are doing in the communities of Los Angeles.

Calories for a Cause Benefits Starlight Children's Foundation

Northwestern Mutual has partnered with the Starlight Children’s Foundation to fund a Starlight Site at Summerlin Hospital in Las Vegas. While healthy children often grow up enjoying spaces designed for play, learning, and discovery, children with serious illnesses must spend an inordinate amount of time in the sterile, medical environment of the hospital. A lively, vibrant room in the children’s hospital can help to create valuable childhood experiences that those children might otherwise miss.

We banned together across our network to host events, sell raffle tickets, and solicit donations to support this cause. We are so proud to have raised over $40,000 from Northwestern Mutual advisors, staff, friends, and family, a true testament to our network-wide philanthropic spirit.

Camp Ronald McDonald Campers Visit Northwestern Mutual

Campers from Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times came to visit Northwestern Mutual and deliver cookies and hot cocoa. Northwestern Mutual has been a long time supporter of the camp as part of our ongoing philanthropy efforts in the pediatric cancer space. For over 30 years, Camp Ronald McDonald has served more than 43,000 campers and has helped create a positive impact on children with cancer. We loved seeing some campers in our Network Office, and will continue to support Camp and their powerful mission to help families affected by cancer.

Christmas Party with LA Family Housing

Northwestern Mutual Los Angeles hosted a Christmas party with LA Family Housing, an organization which helps to transition people out of homelessness and poverty through housing solutions enriched with supportive services. Kids at the affordable living center enjoyed arts and crats, snacks, and a surprise visit from Santa, while their parents were gifted Holiday Kits packed full of everyday essentials.

For the last 35 years, LAFH has served the greater Los Angeles area, and serves more than 7,300 people annually.

Northwestern Mutual Intern Team Earns Top Honor

Through its Foundation, Northwestern Mutual seeks to identify and foster future leaders through its Intern Team Community Service Award program. We are proud to have been selected as this year's winner!“Our interns in offices across the country are dedicated to catalyzing positive change throughout their communities,” said Eric Christophersen, president, Northwestern Mutual Foundation.  “It’s inspiring to see the passion our Los Angeles intern team brings while supporting Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times, further demonstrating their potential as future professional and community leaders.” As part of the award, the Los Angeles intern team will receive a $5,000 grant to support Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times, one of the Foundation’s spotlight camps in the 2018 Tournament of Roses Parade as part of the company’s Childhood Cancer Program.

Northwestern Mutual Visits Camp Ronald McDonald

As part of our ongoing philanthropy efforts in the pediatric cancer space, a group from our Network Office got an inside look at Camp Ronald McDonald during one of this year’s week-long sessions. Even one Saturday spent at the camp was enough to blow us away. It was impossible not to feel the “soul-healing” impact being made on every camper there thanks to the incredible programming and support system established by their counselors, doctors, and camp organizers.

Walk Across America for Childhood Cancer Camps

To raise funds and awareness for the life-changing services offered by childhood cancer camps, cancer survivor Kevin Fern has committed to completing a 4000 mile journey across the country in 2018. As a long time supporter of the fight against childhood cancer, Northwestern Mutual joined Kevin at the launch of his walk to present a $20,000 check for Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times. Camp Ronald McDonald brings joy and healing to families battling cancer, and we are proud to support the camp year after year. To learn more about Kevin's journey, click here.

Proceeds from Northwestern Mutual Fundraiser Launch College-to-Career Program for Students with Autism

Thanks to the proceeds from our benefit concert and a grant from the NM Foundation, Northwestern Mutual was able to give $160,000 to the Center for Autism Research and Treatment (CART) and Child and Adult Neurodevelopmental (CAN) Clinic at UCLA. The money will launch a College to Career Transition Program, which is designed to help students on the spectrum navigate professional environments and sustain long term employment.

Northwestern Mutual’s 2018 Rose Parade Float Raises Awareness for the Fight Against Childhood Cancer

Northwestern Mutual is proud to have been the presenting sponsor of the 2018 Rose Bowl Game. The company used the opportunity to raise awareness for the fight against childhood cancer through the 129th Rose Parade. The theme of the Northwestern Mutual float, “Letting Kids Be Kids,” featured childhood cancer patients who rediscovered their happiness through camp experiences and some of the champions who made those experiences possible. Scott Cohen, an associate wealth management advisor at Northwestern Mutual — West Los Angeles, rode on the float in recognition of 10 years volunteering with Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times.

Northwestern Mutual Supports the American Cancer Society

Northwestern Mutual - Los Angeles is a proud participant and sponsor of the American Cancer Society's "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk." Our financial advisors, clients, and staff joined over 2,500 participants for a 3-mile walk at L.A. LIVE in Downtown Los Angeles in support of breast cancer research, education, and patient services.

Leading up to the walk, our office participated in weekly fundraisers to support the event. These fundraisers included a bake sale and a contest for wearing pink on Wednesdays. Because of these efforts and the leadership of our Director of Career Development, Michelle Lorenzi, we had a record-breaking year for fundraising for our office!

Northwestern Mutual Hosts "Spectacular Sounds of Autism" Benefit Concert

Northwestern Mutual Los Angeles hosted The Spectacular Sounds of Autism, a fundraiser supporting autism awareness and services in higher education and employment through UCLA Semel Institute. All contributions towards the event helped to launch a pioneering program designed to prepare students with autism for success in academics and professional careers.

We raised over $150,000 at the event, which benefitted the Child and Adult Neurodevelopmental Clinic at the UCLA Center for Autism Research and Treatment.

Northwestern Mutual Supports Innovative Cancer Research

In affiliation with the Northwestern Mutual Foundation and Alex's Lemonade Stand, Dr. Steven Jonas was selected to receive the Young Investigator award, a grant of $150,000 over three years. The Young Investigator grant is given to the best and brightest early career scientists to encourage and steer promising researchers toward long-term careers in pediatric oncology investigation. Team members from our Downtown Los Angeles office and West Los Angeles office had the opportunity to take a tour of cancer research labs, participate in demos, and meet the researchers on Dr. Jonas' team after presenting the grant check in-person at UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital. Dr. Jonas expressed his gratitude for the program. "Your generosity enables our group to access critical resources that allow us to step up to the plate and drive new innovations for our patients not just at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital but patients everywhere."

Northwestern Mutual Supports Alex's Lemonade Stand at Annual L.A. Love's Alex's Lemonade Event

Each year, Northwestern Mutual advisors and staff attend L.A. Loves Alex's Lemonade, a fundraiser which benefits Alex's Lemonade Stand and their efforts to end childhood cancer. This year, the event raised over $1.3 million dollars from ticket sales, donations, and the live auction. Thank you to all who contributed to this important cause.
